The civil complaint filed in Santa Clara Superior Court says Google, the online search engine, fired Brian Reid, 54, from his post as director of operations in February 2004 because he did not fit the company’s culture emphasising “youth and energy”.

Google denied the allegations and said Reid’s complaint was without merit. The company said it would defend itself against the charges, but declined to comment on why Reid was laid off.

Google has widely depicted itself as a progressive employer since its founding almost six years ago.
