Sakhalin-2 project - Russia’s new-found environmental fears
Russia is battling a Shell-led consortium over the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project. The authorities cite environmental concerns, but history and the politics of power are not far below the surface
Natural resources minister Yuri Trutnev said: “We are convinced that the company must correct the ecological damage. If that does not happen, we will unfortunately not be able to allow the project to continue.”
Trutnev’s ministry revoked a vital environmental permit, and ordered a new round of environmental inspections of the project.
